By Valeria Vergaray

Now that you’ve invested in new tableware, you’ll want to make use of it as much as you can. That means taking the proper steps in maintaining the quality and beauty of it, so you and your guests can enjoy it for years to come. But dinnerware care doesn’t need to be hard to get right—our quick and easy guide is here to help!

Let’s start with general dinnerware care tips

  1. Wash with mild soap and water and avoid using abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals that can scratch and damage the material.
  2. Dry thoroughly, whether with a soft cloth or towel, or with your dishwasher. Leaving wet or damp can cause water spots.
  3. Store your dinnerware carefully; stack plates of a similar size together and don’t pile too high. You can also opt to store them upright.

Handwash vs dishwash: which is better?

There are pros and cons for each, so what it really comes down to is what the best method is for you, and which one makes you feel most comfortable and confident in caring for your dinnerware.

For handwashing, it’s better to stick to mild soap, warm water (not hot) and gently rubbing using non-abrasive sponges or cloths. After washing, rinse and dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid soaking the dishes in the sink too long, this can weaken the glaze or finish of your dinnerware. You’ll want your dinnerware to maintain its glow.

On the other hand, most of our collections can be used safely in the dishwasher (with the exception of some, so you can feel confident in choosing to dishwash over handwash. To avoid any damage during dishwashing cycles, it’s best to keep these dinnerware care tips in mind:

  1. Avoid over-filling and placing dishes too close to one another. This will help minimize the risk of chips and cracks.
  2. Following the dishwasher’s manual, set it to at an appropriate temperature and avoid using high heat drying, especially for porcelain.
  3. Always, always, always use a light detergent.
  4. Allow them to cool completely before removing or storing.

Noticed an unwanted scratch or scrape on your dinnerware? Things can happen, especially with everyday use. We can help you get it back to its original beauty with our thorough Care Kit and step-by-step guide below.

  1. Clean your dinnerware: Let’s get rid of any surface dirt or grime. Grab your mild dish soap, turn on the warm water and make sure to dry it completely before you start the next step.
  2. Assess the scratch: Get a good look. Is it superficial or deep? This will help determine which dinnerware care method to choose.
  3. Choose your method: If the material for your dinnerware is porcelain or bone china, use a non-gel toothpaste or a baking soda and lemon juice mix. For stoneware and earthenware, test a small area with Bar Keepers Friend or a gentle metal polish.
  4. Rinse and dry: Rinse again to remove any residue. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  5. Evaluate the results: If the scratch is still visible but lighter, you can repeat. If there’s no improvement, we suggest leaving it as is to avoid further damage.
